Make the Most of Your Wall Space

In South London homes, where space is often at a premium, wall-mounted shelves and storage are a practical and stylish solution. Whether you live in a compact Battersea flat or a Wandsworth terrace, using your walls effectively can transform a room.

Know Your Wall Type

Before drilling any holes, you need to know what your wall is made of. The wrong fixing in the wrong wall type is the main reason shelves fall down.

Solid Brick or Block

Most South London Victorian and Edwardian homes have solid brick walls. These are strong and hold heavy loads well with the right fixings.

  • Use: Wall plugs and screws
  • Drill bit: Masonry bit
  • Tip: Drill slowly to avoid cracking the brick

Plasterboard (Stud Walls)

Internal partition walls are often plasterboard on a timber frame. Plasterboard alone cannot hold much weight.

  • Use: Plasterboard fixings for light loads, or screw directly into the timber studs for heavy items
  • Drill bit: Standard wood bit
  • Tip: Use a stud finder to locate the timber frame behind the plasterboard

Concrete

Some newer builds and flats have concrete walls, which require heavy-duty fixings.

  • Use: Concrete anchors
  • Drill bit: SDS masonry bit
  • Tip: A standard drill may not be powerful enough; you may need a hammer drill

Getting Shelves Level

The most important part of hanging shelves is getting them perfectly level. Use a spirit level, not your eye. Even a small slope is noticeable once items are placed on the shelf.

  1. Mark the position of the first bracket
  2. Use a spirit level to mark the second bracket position
  3. Drill pilot holes and fit wall plugs if needed
  4. Secure the brackets and check level again before loading

Weight Considerations

Every shelf and fixing has a weight limit. Consider what you plan to store:

  • Books are surprisingly heavy: a metre of paperbacks weighs around 10-15kg
  • Kitchen items like crockery and pans add up quickly
  • Floating shelves look clean but typically hold less than bracket-mounted shelves

Choose brackets and fixings rated for more than you plan to load. Our carpentry service can advise on the right approach for your specific needs.

When to Call a Professional

Hanging a single lightweight shelf is a manageable DIY task. But call a professional when:

  • You need multiple shelves or a full storage system
  • The wall type is unclear or you hit unexpected materials when drilling
  • You want floating shelves on plasterboard walls
  • The items to be stored are heavy
  • You want built-in shelving or custom carpentry
